An intern’s tale of discovery – becoming a Wavie

On 9 March 2011, Space Shuttle Discovery made its final landing after 39 flights and over 27 years of service. Having explored deep into the cosmos, the Discovery’s legacy is similar to that of the old maritime ships of exploration that came before it.  Exactly five years later, I set off on my own journey of discovery as I began my internship with the People & Culture team at Wavelength. As my first role in HR, I was both extremely excited and nervous. My nerves were quickly forgotten however when I was welcomed immediately into the family.

Home is where the heart is

On my first day at Wavelength, I was taken on an office tour and greeted at my desk with a welcome pack full of goodies. I even had the opportunity to meet Claire, one of our Directors, in an informal setting during a new starters’ coffee catch-up session. Thanks to a personalised induction plan I already felt right at home within my first week at Wavelength.  And in this short time, I’ve been lucky to experience and be a part of the amazing culture that makes Wavelength a truly unique organisation.

Every day my expectations are exceeded and I’ve been fortunate to experience first hand how Wavelength’s values of Excellence, Integrity, Ingenuity and Heart are lived out by its people every single day.  My internship allows me to gain hands-on experience and invaluable mentoring from Emma and Lottie. Under their guidance, I have developed and grown in my generalist HR skills and been involved with a wide range of exciting projects within the business.

I always feel supported and Emma and Lottie have taken a keen interest in my development, regularly holding catch-up sessions to check in with how I’m going, both from a training and culture-fit perspective. And day to day, I feel I can approach anyone for advice on the social, cultural and practical aspects of working here.

 Workplace flexibility a reality

Working on a part-time basis has also provided me with an immeasurable amount of flexibility, especially when it comes to balancing working at Wavelength with my academic studies. The People & Culture team has been so supportive of my studies, always asking how I’m going and accommodating my class schedule and exams without question.

Combining my theoretical studies with real-world experience at Wavelength has allowed me to advance on my own journey of discovery. I’m strengthening my knowledge and skills and gaining a great insight into HR and how to apply what I’ve learnt in a practical sense. Becoming a Wavie has been one of the best things I’ve ever done.
